Plantation One Time Limited Edition Peru 2006 Rum

Plantation, now renamed Planteray, is the rum brand of Maison Ferrand, the Cognac house of Alexandre Gabriel, which buys aged rum from distilleries across the tropics and gives it a second maturation in its own cellars in the Charente. The One-Time Limited Edition series is a single vintage from a single distillery, released once and never repeated. This one comes from the Cartavio distillery in the Chicama Valley on the north coast of Peru, a sugar region where the cane grows year-round and the rums tend toward richness rather than funk. Cartavio distills molasses on both a John Dore pot still and a column still, and this 2006 vintage was aged around eleven years in ex-bourbon casks in Peru, then about three more in Ferrand's casks at Javrezac in the Cognac region, for fourteen years in all, before bottling at 47.9% ABV. The published notes read like a Christmas cake: dried fruit, mixed peel, baking spice and toasted nuts, with citrus and passionfruit behind them and dark chocolate, vanilla, oak and walnut oil holding the structure together. A good introduction to Peruvian rum, best sipped neat or with a single cube.
