Neisson Single Barrel 2014 Rhum Agricole Ed Hamilton Selection
Neisson is the family-owned distillery at Le Carbet on the Caribbean coast of Martinique, making AOC Martinique rhum agricole from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice on a Creole column still, and Ed Hamilton is the importer and Ministry of Rum founder who brought Neisson to the United States and has picked a series of single casks from its warehouse under his own label. This one was distilled in 2014 and filled into used Cognac barrels on November 24 of that year. In December 2017 the contents of several of those barrels were moved into used American bourbon barrels, and Hamilton chose one of them for this bottling, drawn off in 2018 at 51% ABV (102 proof) with a yield of just 205 bottles. The Cognac-then-bourbon aging gives it a nose that Hamilton describes as closer to an American dark spirit than a typical agricole, with the first sip opening into the complexity of aged cane-juice rhum: sweet fruit, coconut and nutmeg, carrying through a long finish. A Martinique rhum for bourbon drinkers, and a tiny one-off that won't be repeated once these 205 bottles are gone.
