Goose Island Bourbon County 30th Anniversary Reserve
Bourbon County Stout began in 1992, when Goose Island brewmaster Greg Hall met Booker Noe, Jim Beam's master distiller and grandson of Jim Beam, and filled a batch of imperial stout into used Beam bourbon barrels. That beer created the bourbon barrel-aged stout category, along with the Black Friday lines, bottle shares and annual variants that followed. For its 30th edition in 2022, Goose Island went back to where it started with this Reserve: the stout was aged in barrels from Jim Beam's Small Batch Bourbon Collection, which Beam itself launched 30 years earlier, and the barrels were then blended together, each lot bringing the character of the bourbon it once held. The finished beer is an imperial stout bottled at 14.4% ABV and released nationwide in select markets. Goose Island lists the tasting notes as dark chocolate, vanilla and cherry, the cherry and vanilla coming through from the Beam barrels on top of the stout's dense chocolate core. It's a one-time anniversary bottling built to celebrate both the brewery and the distillery behind the original, and it rewards cellaring and sharing. Pour into a snifter, let it warm a little, and take your time. Contains wheat.
